Closing the Gaps in Energy Audits — One Room at a Time

LiDAR scans have transformed how we capture buildings — but the real friction for energy auditors begins after the scan.

Energy Intelligence Team··4 min read

Today, we're shipping a tool built around how auditors actually work.

When we sat down with energy auditors, the same pain surfaced across every conversation. Capture technology has come a long way — but scans still miss things. A utility closet tucked behind a door. A heat pump compressor mounted on the side of the house. A non-standard gambrel roof that no automatic model gets quite right.

Each gap, taken alone, seems minor. Cumulatively, they quietly undermine the one number that anchors every audit recommendation: total house volume. Get that wrong, and downstream calculations — heating loads, insulation requirements, HVAC sizing — inherit the error.

“The challenge isn't just capturing buildings — it's everything that comes after.”

Introducing the Energy Intelligence Building CAD Tool

We built a lightweight, intuitive CAD environment that slots directly into the existing audit workflow. It's not a replacement for LiDAR — it's the layer that makes LiDAR results trustworthy. Auditors can take the raw scan as a starting point and precisely fill in what the sensor missed, all without leaving the platform.

🏠

Add Missing Rooms & Spaces

Quickly sketch and attach any room or enclosed space omitted from the scan — crawl spaces, attic sections, sunrooms, or attached garages — with accurate dimensions.

Include Overlooked Electrical Appliances

Log heat pumps, water heaters, EV chargers, and other electrical loads that didn't make it into the initial capture, keeping your appliance inventory complete.

📐

Design & Adjust Complex Roof Structures

Model mansard, hip, gambrel, and butterfly rooflines with precision controls — the geometries that trip up automated scanners most often.

Real-Time Volume Computation

Here's the part auditors have responded to most: every addition you make immediately updates the total house volume. There's no recalculation step. No exporting to a spreadsheet. No waiting for a back-end job to finish.

💡 The Core Idea

As you make additions, the system automatically computes the total house volume in real time. No manual recalculation. No guesswork. Just accurate, dynamic modeling built for how auditors actually work.

This matters practically because auditors rarely build a model in a single pass. They move room to room, cross-referencing the physical space. The volume figure needs to be reliable at every intermediate step — not just at the end — so you can catch discrepancies while you're still on site.

See It in Action 🎥

Watch real-time volume computation as rooms, appliances, and roof structures are added to a building model — exactly as an auditor would build it out during a site visit.

Built Around the Audit Workflow

We deliberately kept the tool lightweight. Energy auditors are not CAD professionals, and requiring a steep learning curve would defeat the purpose. The interface is designed around the most common edit types — adding a rectangular room, tagging an appliance, adjusting a roof pitch — and makes each one achievable in a handful of clicks.

The result is a tool that reduces the post-scan cleanup burden substantially, tightens the accuracy of volume-dependent calculations, and gives auditors more confidence in the reports they hand to clients and utilities.

✅ The Outcome

  • Reduced post-scan cleanup burden — fill gaps in under a minute per missed element
  • Tighter volume-dependent accuracy — heating loads, insulation, and HVAC sizing all benefit
  • More confident audit reports — numbers you can stand behind with clients and utilities
